There is no limit to how long or short a story can be. It can be as long as you please, or as short as a few sentences. The thing that matters is that it's good. It should be up to the standard, it should make the reader want to read more. If it lacks that, it is not good enough. The best thing about the best stories is that they feel real. Even though, you know that what you are reading might not be true, you get the feeling that it is, that you are there, along with the main character, fighting along with him/her to get rid of his/her worries and problems. The 'real feel' inside the stories is what makes them spell-binding and awesome. If a story lacks this, then it doesn't feel real enough, and the readers would just roll their eyes and say "This is just made-up. Who wants to read that??" and just turn away. No one wants that!
It is quite simple enough to give your story a real feel. Here are some tips:
- Your main character should face REAL problems. They may be facing their worst fear or trying to bear taunts from other people about something that happened earlier. This gives the reader the 'real feel' because at some poit of life, they too have undergone such similar circumstances.
- While writing, feel as though your characters are real. this helps.
- Know your characters: each person has a unique personality and so should your characters. You should know what they would do in a particular condition depending upon their personalities.
- Keep everything to a limit. Don't make it too far-fetched.
That's for now.
