Harry turned to Anne.
“We can’t go on like this! We are sure to fail! Oh God! Help us!” he falls on his knees and begins to cry.
Anne comforts him and try to reason with him.
“Come on! It isn’t that bad. Just because you lost the first round doesn’t mean that you will lose forever!” she patted his head.
“Come on! Buck up! We’ve got to win this time!” she tells him.
In the above extract, we meet two kinds of people. One is a lose-heart, hopeless kind of guy Harry, while the other is the comforting, soothing, optimist girl Anne. How do we know all that? We know that from their behavior in the above piece of writing.
So, where are we heading in this post? Obviously, towards the fact that every character has a role and a specific behavior in a story. If you read a piece of writing that has one character being a friendly and social kind of person and in the next instance being a mean and unkind person, you are sure to get confused. Of course, here we must keep in mind that a person may have double role in a story. Just like the story of Jeckell and Hyde. They are the same person in the story, but if you take them analytically, they are two different characters and here we are taking two different characters, not one person.
Different characters with different personalities help the reader to maintain an understanding of the characters’ psychology. They also help to maintain the reader’s interest in the character. It makes the character more real as it enables the reader to understand what the character might do in a certain situation.
Maintaining separate personalities for the characters is a very helpful process, both for the reader and the writer. Believe it or not, it helps to bring the reader and writer close. I mean, if a writer emphasizes more on the romantic personality of its characters, then can’t we be sure that the writers enjoy romantic stories. After all, writers usually write for passion, right?
Keeping my post short, I would just say that while writing always keep in mind what kind of personality you would like you character to have. After all, a writer can change the fates but in the story it writes.
So, happy writing!
